In this stage of the build we are ready to test the Speeduino v0.3.7 ECU we built. We build a prototype standalone harness to connect 8 fuel injectors. And the 8 Chevy LS smart coils we pulled from the junkyard 2003 Silverado 5.3 liter. Since this stage of the build was performed during the winter time, and since we are still in the testing stage, we use a separate Arduino Uno to simulate the engine crankshaft turning at any RPM. This is accomplished using a software called Ardustim. And Druid. These are available for download and installation on the Arduino Uno. Due to the balance weight that is part of the Ford Harmonic Balancer, it would be difficult to test using the actual balancer. So the Arduino Uno can simulate the actual output of the Crankshaft Position Sensor on the engine. We also have a set of restored 2000 Ford Explorer GT40P heads that we pulled off the junkyard truck back in 2020. At that time we also pulled the Explorer upper and lower intake manifold. These heads and will be installed on the mustang. But for now they will serve as a test fixture. These components allowed us to create a Ford 302 top end simulator. The simulator helps create the harness, and allows viewing of the spark plugs firing. Initial tests are performed at 60 RPM. Or 1 Hertz (1 rev per second). This speed is convenient because it allows us to prove ECU operation, wasted spark configuration, proper wiring connections and that the firing order operates as we discussed in Part II. In the next video (Part IV), we will prepare our test engine for first fire. This test engine will prove everything works before starting work on the actual Mustang. Filmed April 2024
