KOF '96, which introduced both the forward run and the backwards and forwards rolling evasion mechanic. Also the year where Athena gains her Psychic Teleport. This is my first time actually playing the single player of '96 (I've only ever played it with Sissy very rarely), and I will say that compared to KOF '94 and ESPECIALLY '95, I had a lot more fun with '96. Not just because I managed to clear it in an actual reasonable amount of time for once, but because the gameplay just felt "better" and Athena herself feels quite nice to control. The enemy AI isn't as blatantly button-ready until you get to Chizuru, and as I realized after some failures, is that Athena does have some.... rather interesting ways of defeating both Chizuru and Goenitz by herself. Also, can't forget about that lovely fighting stance and outfit too. Next stop from here, the end of the Orochi saga with KOF '97.
