Ask an Endo Surgeon | What Is a Common First Sign of Endometriosis?

Dr. McHale explains a common first sign of endometriosis, as told to her by her patients. She explains how these symptoms women experience are not normal, and should be addressed by a specialist in order to receive a comprehensive diagnosis. Dr. Melissa McHale, M.D., is a Gynecologic Surgeon and Endometriosis Excision Specialist. She has performed over 300 complex excision of endometriosis cases and she has extensive experience with sacral neuromodulator implants, transvaginal ultrasound diagnostics, and the management of pain and fertility in endometriosis patients. Dr. McHale completed her OB/GYN residency at Johns Hopkins before completing a two-year fellowship with Dr. Andrea Vidali, a world-renowned surgeon specializing in endometriosis, miscarriage, and reproductive immunology at Braverman Reproductive Immunology and Endometriosis Surgery. At Pelvic Rehabilitation Medicine, our pelvic pain specialists provide a functional, rehab approach to pelvic pain. When you visit one of our offices, you spend an hour with your doctor reviewing in detail your medical history and symptoms. Then, we perform an internal exam (no speculum) to evaluate your nerves and muscles. Together, we'll discuss an individual treatment plan that gets to the root cause of your pain and helps you to feel better. The best part: you can begin treatment the same day! At PRM, our mission is to decrease the time patients are suffering from pelvic pain symptoms. One of the questions we got was, what is the first sign of endometriosis? This varies a lot by the person. Most commonly, everybody I see tells me from my first period, I knew something was wrong, I knew something was different. So people who can't go to school or find that they have to go to the nurse's office during their period, that's not normal and is often the first sign of endometriosis. But of course, endometriosis is more than just period pain, and so A lot of our patients will say "I had a lot of pain trying to use tampons." "I had a lot of bladder symptoms" or "I had a lot of bowel symptoms and initially was diagnosed with IBS and then connected it to my periods." These are all different symptoms of endometriosis. And so, really seeing someone who can identify all of those things together and add them up to a cohesive diagnosis is the best approach.
