Revision of weight loss surgery can mean improving the original procedure, correcting an issue, or altering the procedure from one to another from sleeve to duodenal switch for example. You may have heard of re-sleeving or a gastric bypass pouch revision where a surgeon further decreases the size of the gastric pouch to increase restriction for the patient. We can also increase the malabsoptive factor of a procedure by shifting how much small intestine is bypassed. We may also tighten or loosen the openings between connections call anastomoses. Another revision example is converting a lap-band or gastric band to sleeve, band to bypass, or band to DS for failure to help a patient meet their goals or to correct issues with the gastric band. Patients can choose to go from sleeve to bypass, sleeve to DS, bypass to DS, or make other more unique alterations. Revisions to bariatric surgery should only be performed by experienced bariatric surgeons due to the increased risk of secondary surgery.
