Sendhil Mullainathan, professor of economics at Harvard University, co-founder of Poverty Action Lab, and co-founder and co-director of ideas42, discussed his research at the Social Enterprise Forum: The Economics and Psychology of Poverty. Mullainathan described how behavioral economics can be used to identify bottlenecks that affect poverty — with these barriers identified, programs can be reframed to be more effective. Following Mullainathan, Eldar Shafir, the William Stewart Tod Professor of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University and co-founder and co-director of ideas42, discussed applying what we know about psychology and positive affirmations to improve fiscal performance. With an introduction by Ray Fisman, the Lambert Family Professor of Social Enterprise and co-director of the Social Enterprise Program at Columbia Business School.
