Side shot of the graves STORYLINE As the sun rose over freshly dug graves over the Potocari Memorial centre on Monday, thousands of people began pouring in to pay their last respect for 613 recently identified victims of the Srebrenica massacre. Families of those killed, along with many others from all over the world, came on buses and on foot, to take part in mass funeral on Monday and to mark the 16th anniversary of the worst massacre in Europe since the Nazi era. The coffins of the victims to be buried lay wrapped in green cloth on the grass. Relatives and friends prayed around the coffins and looked for the names of their loved ones who were among more than 8,000 Muslim men and boys slaughtered when Bosnian Serb forces entered Srebrenica in July 1995. Around 4,000 victims have so far been laid to rest in Potocari, which was built in 2003 across from the former UN base where Bosnian Muslims had sought shelter. Srebrenica - with its majority Muslim population - was a UN-protected area, besieged by Serb forces throughout the 1992-95 war. But UN troops there offered little resistance when the Serbs overran the town on 11 July 1995 and carried out the killings, the climax to the Bosnian war in which 100-thousand people were killed. "This is so sad," said Srebrenica resident Zineta Mesic, "So many people killed here. I have a lot of neighbours to bury today, some 30 of them. What can I tell you?" An international court later labelled the killings a genocide. The killers ploughed the bodies into hastily dug mass graves, which they later reopened to move the bodies to other sites in an attempt to hide the crime. They worked with bulldozers that ripped bodies apart. Forensic experts have been painstakingly assembling complete skeletons and checking each bone against the DNA from survivors' blood samples. Most of the time, however, families do not fully recover the remains of their loved ones when only parts of skeletons are able to be identified. Former Serb general Ratko Mladic, who was captured in May, is standing trial in The Hague, Netherlands on charges of masterminding the massacre.
