Cigar Review – Montecristo Espada When Smoked: October 2023 Obtained from: purchased box online Size: Guard (6 inches x 50) Approximate cost: US$14.00 (single stick retail, deals can be had) See ratings below This review is for the Montecristo Espada, a new world Montecristo that was somewhat of a watershed cigar for Montecristo. The non-Cuban Montecristo was well known for high quality milder cigars, but by 2010, user preferences had passed them by. Altadis (the parent company) realized Montecristo needed a strong kick in the pants, and and made a deal with Nicaragua tobacco power Plasencia. The Altadis blending team, Grupo de Maestros received access to Plasencia’s tobaccos and state of the art factory to develop the Espada. In the video, I show a few pages from my dusty old cigar journal. As it shows, the Montecristo Espada was one of the first cigars I smoked, and I enjoyed it so much that it (and a couple of others) really were pivotal in cementing my interest in cigar smoking. Now, revisiting the Espada nearly ten years later…would I still rate it the same 9.5/10 as I did many years ago? I still really like this cigar. Full disclosure, I burned through the box of 10 I bought a few months ago, and this was one of the last couple of sticks left unsmoked. Burn, draw and other construction was just about perfect. Flavor was excellent as well. It started out tasting excellent and finished the same. No rating this one by thirds – it is straight out good from start to finish. Wood, with wonderful overtones sweet cream and nuts. I’d say this cigar is a bit over medium body, about 6.0/10 body. Overall smoking experience is a 9.0/10. I’d like to think my tastes have become more discerning over the years and that explains the half-point difference from my years-ago review, but who knows? I mention cost in the video. In the US market (the primary market for the Espada) it retails for nearly US$15. That is too much for this cigar. But it shows up a lot (in the newer Oscuro version as well) in samplers and other deals. I believe I paid about $80 for a box of ten on Cigar Page earlier this year, but that was one of their many sales. If you can pick this cigar up for $8-$10 I’d say its worth buying more than one.
