So you want to be an oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMFS). You’re an overachiever that isn’t satisfied with just being a dentist and want the extra degree of surgical expertise. Let’s debunk the public perception myths and give it to you straight. This is the reality of oral and maxillofacial surgery. OMFS is a subspecialty of dentistry that focuses on the surgical management of the face, jaw, and oral cavity. It's often misunderstood as simply encompassing wisdom teeth extraction, but OMFS can perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. To become an OMFS, you must complete dental school (rather than medical school). If you want to explore a similar line of work through the medical training path, consider ENT (otorhinolaryngology). After dental school, you can pursue a 4 or 6 year OMFS residency path, with the latter also earning you an MD. After OMFS residency, you can subspecialize with fellowship. The three main fellowship options are head and neck oncology, facial cosmetics, and cleft and craniomaxillofacial surgery. There's a lot to love about OMFS. Most OMFS are in private practice, but there is a substantial opportunity cost of pursuing OMFS versus practicing immediately after dental school as a general dentist. If your life outside of medicine is important to you, OMFS can provide the flexibility to perform surgery while still having time for your own family and interests. ✒️ Accompanying Blog Post: https://medschoolinsiders.com/medical... 💌 Sign up for my weekly newsletter - https://medschoolinsiders.com/newsletter 🌍 Website & blog - https://medschoolinsiders.com 📸 Instagram - / medschoolinsiders 🐦 Twitter - / medinsiders 🗣️ Facebook - / medschoolinsiders 🎥 My Youtube Gear: https://kit.co/kevinjubbalmd/ 👀 Hand Picked Productivity Tools: https://www.amazon.com/shop/medschool... 🎵My Study Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/1231934...
