After nine months of the Canadian boycott, US tourism officials still do not understand Canadians. They continue to think this is temporary — that Canadians will eventually return to the United States once the political noise settles, or that we will forgive and forget after a few cheap hotel packages or flight deals. What they fail to understand is that Canadians are not coming back. This is not about discounts or emotions. It is about standing up for our country and sending a clear message that Canada will no longer support a nation that continues to disrespect us. US tourism officials from Brand USA and other organizations keep saying that Canadians will “get over it.” They think we can be sold or bribed back with marketing campaigns, but that strategy is dead. The Canadian boycott has become one of the strongest in decades. The message from Canada is clear — we will not travel to the United States, we will not support their tourism, and we will not fund an economy that supports Donald Trump’s 51st state rhetoric and annexation threats. US businesses are now paying the price. Liquor exports to Canada are down. Cross border shopping has collapsed. US hotels and attractions are empty. And the US media still refuses to admit the real reason — Canadians are angry and united. Canadians do not want to go to the United States because of Trump, his government, and the growing safety concerns with CBP and ICE agents. Border security has become intimidating and hostile. ICE raids, political division, and gun violence have made the United States an unsafe destination for visitors. The United States is no longer a reliable trading partner or a safe place to visit. Canadians have woken up to that reality. Instead of aligning our policies and tourism interests with the United States, Canada needs to strengthen its own economy and build new partnerships with other nations that respect us. This is Canada’s moment to stand firm, to protect our identity, and to support our own businesses, tourism, and industries. The US tourism decline will continue as long as Trump’s administration and his followers keep disrespecting Canada. The boycott is working, and Canadians are proving that we do not need the United States to thrive.
