We all thought the IKEA Richmond store was big, but the one in Springvale is 35% larger and is enormous. There are more than 1,000 products displayed in over 60 room settings in the showroom, and the market hall is almost 7,000sqm. Designed by Leffler Simes Architects, it is on an 80,000-square-metre site that includes a Harvey Norman store as well as 20 other large retailers. Ikea Australia managing director David Hood said confidence in the retail sector's long-term strength was behind the decision to invest in new stores. ''We've had four to five years of continuous comparable growth year on year - we've been in pluses right through the GFC to this year,'' he said. ''Australia is a fairly young country with young families, good disposable income, a lot of renovations going on and many new houses being built, so someone needs to furnish them. We want a piece of the action.'' Mr Hood said the larger space in Springvale would allow Ikea to showcase all the items in its range, unlike the previous 7000-square-metre store in Moorabbin. ''Moorabbin was not a typical Ikea store − it only existed in Australia … but what you see in Springvale, is the way you'll see Ikea in the US and all over Europe,'' he said. ''We sell huge quantities and when you're in somewhere like Moorabbin, the store just reaches its peak capacity … we need to have a store of at least 25,000 square metres.''
