Scouting has always been focused on conservation. The new (as of 2020) BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award is a replacement for the old William T. Hornaday award. The medal and square knot are similar in color and style. Now this award is available to youth and adults. With the introduction of a new workbook makes the approval process easier. Conservation projects and service is now recognized nationally. Preservation of our natural resources and helping safeguard natural assets have a common goal in Scouting. The requirements were issued on November 9, 2020 • On October 13, 2020, the BSA discontinued the William T. Hornaday awards program (BSA found unethical practices of him, research) • “The fundamental purpose of the BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Awards program is to encourage learning by the participants and to increase public awareness about natural resource conservation” • This award can be earned by youth in Scouts BSA, (18) Venturing, and Sea Scouts (21). Note: Requirements are all on PDF, decide later what exactly to mention in the show. • The award is processed by the local Council’s Conservation Committee and approved by the National Council Very similar to how an Eagle Scout candidate would go before a board of review, the local council will conduct a board of review. • The projects are expected to require a comparable amount of time, effort, and energy to that of an Eagle Scout Service Project. • Scouts must also use the DCSA Project Workbook • Adults can also earn the BSA Distinguished Conservationist, however, this is one of the few awards in the BSA that is a nomination only. There are no listed requirements, but included with the nomination must be a letter of recommendation of the contributions and service by the nominee Regional, national, or international level “Distinguished and exemplary service to natural resource conservation and environmental improvement over a sustained period (at least 20 years)” is outlined by National. • “The focus of the award nomination should be on the nominee’s involvement with youth, especially in the areas of education and volunteerism and inspiring them to excel in conservation, natural resources management, and environmental improvement.” • BSA Distinguished Conservation Service Award Certificate (organizations, also on requirements doc) • Youth and adults wear the same insignia, that’s the DCSA square knot patch, green, white, and blue rope on a tan background, above the (wearer’s) left pocket. 📊 Poll (11/30/22): Is Conservation an important part of Scouting? (110 Votes) 82% A critical part of Scouting. 7% A new influence to Scouting. 9% Not as much as it was in the past. 2% Not an important part of Scouting today. ⏱ Time Stamp & Video Jump List: 0:00 Distinguished Conservation Service Award 2:41 The Basics of the Award 4:35 Mission Statement of the Award 5:21 The New Requirements for the Award 6:01 Qualifying Project Workbook 7:19 Youth & Adult Square Knot 8:27 Unit Service Projects 9:00 Special Announcement #scouterstan #scouts #scoutleader @ScouterStan © 2022 S Richards LLC
