Heron Lake is located in Northern New Mexico just 25 miles South of the Colorado Border and is one of New Mexico’s state parks- a no-wake lake at 7167' elevation. Heron Lake State Park is one of our favorite places to camp in the state. We'll visit several of the Lake's campgrounds that line the shore of this scenic lake as well as check out the current state of the Rio Chama Trail. When we visited in June of 2023, the campsites had no running water to the restrooms, with only water available at the visitors center.
