Why Pashupatinath special? Pashupatinath, located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, is Nepal’s most sacred temple for Shiva devotees and the central hub of Shivaratri celebrations. What happens during Shivaratri at Pashupatinath Huge Crowds and Pilgrimage Thousands-often hundreds of thousands to over a million devotees from Nepal, India, and elsewhere come to the temple for prayers and rituals on and around the day of Shivaratri. Nightlong Worship and Vigil (Jagran) The main highlight is all-night worship, where devotees meditate, chant mantras like “Om Namah Shivaya,” and keep a spiritual vigil through the night. The temple often opens its gates very early (around 2 AM) to allow long lines of devotees to have their darshan (sacred viewing) of the Shiva Lingam. Rituals, Offerings & Fire Lamps Devotees offer milk, water, bael (bilva) leaves, flowers, and other offerings to Shiva. Oil lamps and candles are lit in and around the temple, creating a brightly lit and devotional environment. Ascetics and Sadhus Many sadhus (holy men) — some covered in ash, some chanting or meditating — gather from across Nepal and India as part of the tradition. They are an iconic part of the atmosphere. Bagmati River Rituals Devotees often take a holy dip in the Bagmati River early in the morning before entering the temple, as purity and cleansing are part of the festival’s traditions. Traditional Timing Shivaratri usually falls between February and March each year. For example, in 2026 it was on February 15 according to the lunar calendar (Falgun). Cultural & Spiritual Significance Shivaratri isn’t just a day of prayer — it’s believed that worship and meditation on this night can lead to spiritual growth, inner peace, and liberation. Devotees fast or refrain from food or certain foods through the day before the night’s rituals. Important Notes The temple complex becomes very crowded, and security or crowd control measures are often in place due to the scale of the gathering. Photography inside the inner temple and sanctum is restricted, and there are specific rules about entry that visitors should respect.
