Tenebrae factae sunt was written in 1938. LYRICS: Tenebrae factae sunt dum crucifixissent Jesum Judaei, et circa horam nonam exclamavit Jesus vocemagna: Deus meus, Deus meus, ut quid me dereliquisti? Et inclinato capite emisit spiritum. Exclamans Jesus voce magna ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et inclinato capite emisit spiritum. (Matin Responsory for Holy Saturday) There was darkness over all the earth when the Jews crucified Jesus; and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice: My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Then he bowed his head, and yielded up his spirit. Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit. And he bowed his head and yielded up his spirit. John Rutter, English composer and conductor, is associated with choral music throughout the world. His recordings with the Cambridge Singers (the professional chamber choir he set up in 1981) have reached a wide global audience, many of them featuring his own music in definitive versions. Among John’s best-known choral works are Gloria, Requiem, Magnificat, Mass of the Children, and Visions, together with many church anthems, choral songs and Christmas carols.
