Phyllida Barlow, Steven Claydon, Helen Marten and David Medalla are nominataed for The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture, a new £30,000 biennial award. The award recognises a British or UK-based artist of any age, at any stage in their career, who has made a significant contribution to the development of contemporary sculpture. Discover the work of the four shortlisted artists in our prize exhibition which showcases the unique approach each artist has to making sculpture. PHYLLIDA BARLOW Phyllida Barlow’s works are physically impressive, often filling, interrupting or invading the space in which they are situated, creating in the viewer a heightened awareness of their surroundings. Her monumental sculptures are constructed from simple, inexpensive materials such as timber, cardboard, fabric, polystyrene, paint, scrim and cement which make reference to structures we encounter every day in urban environments. For The Hepworth Wakefield, Barlow has made two new works: untitled: signs2016 that recall industrial ‘To Let’ signs and untitled: blackcoils2016. Both are installed at height above the immense untitled: screestage (2013), exhibited here in the UK for the first time. When considering the process of making her art works, Barlow has said, ‘Maybe I don’t think enough about beauty in my work because I’m so curious about other qualities, abstract qualities of time, weight, balance, rhythm; collapse and fatigue.’ The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture The Hepworth Wakefield 21 October 2016 - 19 February 2017 Free entry The Hepworth Prize for Sculpture is supported by the following individuals: Linda Bennett David Liddiment David Roberts Supporting sponsors: Mtec Litestructures Media Partner: Yorkshire Post Director: CR Vickers Sound: Louis Bhose Max Giles
