CORONAVIRUS The Spanish army worked on building a giant makeshift hospital Sunday, March 22, in Madrid's IFEMA exhibition complex, and the facility is preparing to take in its first COVID-19 patients. ————————— READ MORE: Civil Protection volunteers, armed forces personnel and council workers have been working through the night building beds, preparing triage stations and oxygen provision. On Sunday 60 patients were brought to be treated at the sprawling exhibition center on the outskirts of Madrid, which when fully operational will have room for more than 5,000 patients. Two student doctors in their last year of study went to the center to offer their help on Sunday, saying they would go wherever they were needed. Spain is Europe’s hardest-hit country after Italy, with 28,603 infections and 1,756 deaths. For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms. For some it can cause more severe illness, especially in older adults and people with existing health problems. (AP)
