The great Linus! I must admit that I'm rather puzzled about the fact that I learned about him just recently! How could I miss „Linus And His Band“ for all these years? But it seems I'm not the only one – in fact there is no comprehensive story about him in English, just two very good articles in Swedish - the language of his exile from 1973 on. Linus/ Karl Gebhardt was born in Offenbach/ Germany in 1946 and migrated to the USA with his mother in 1958. The family settled in Chicago, Karl got his musical education by visiting blues clubs in south Chicago, but founded a teen punk/ surf band, The Gremlins, in 1963 – which even put out a single. Gebhardt had to leave the state of Illinois due to some legal problems in 1964 and moved to California. In 1965, he met Bill Payne, later Little Feat, re-named himself „Kal-X-Blue“ and formed „Something Wild“ together with Payne. „Something Wild“ shared bills with the Nazz, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Music Machine, The Golliwogs and The Seeds, and finally put out the classic „Trippin' Out“ with Kal on vocals - later canonized by being included on Pebbles Vol. 7. In 1967, Karl founded Wedge, which was more advanced in musical styling, heading into a blues based psychedelia. Wedge supported the Gratefull Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and The Flaming Groovies, but didn't manage to get a record contract. When Karl got drafted in 1970, he took Wedge – now Wedge Europe - with him to Germany, and they toured intensely there and as well in Italy. Alas, in Germany as a NATO country, he was constantly faced by the threat of extradiction as a deserter, and so the band moved to the safe haven of Sweden, where he stayed until his death in 2016. At that time there were talks about recording an album for Augie Meyers' The Texas Re-Cord Co. label, but this never materialized. After the dissolution of Wedge, he started „Linus And His Band“ together with ex-members of the band, and recorded two classic seven inch EPs and a great album during the time of the band's existence between 1977 and '78. Stylistically, they developed in a back to the roots move into a musical realm which you can aproppriatly label Pub Rock. It is beyond me why he never got any success with „Linus And His Band“ - not in Sweden, much less in the UK, but maybe it was a mix of bad luck and his more or less difficult personality. The 1977 debut EP provides you with four tracks – three of them self-composed. „Isabella“ is a driving rockabilly tour de force with maybe Motor Boys Motor already looming around the corner, if you remember them. „I'll Be There“ is a cool Ray Price cover which Rockpile would have been proud of. „Naked In City“ is a track with a strong reference to Ducks Deluxe/ Tyla Gang, I think, and „Bernadette“ is a tongue-in-cheek classic which had deserved a cover version!
