Directed by RCM cello professor Jakob Kullberg, RCM cellists perform Villa-Lobos' Bachianas brasileiras no 1. Villa-Lobos Bachianas brasileiras no 1 00:00 i Introdução (Embolada) 08:07 ii Prelúdio (Modinha) 15:23 iii Fuga (Conversa) Following the collapse of the Empire of Brazil, Villa-Lobos grew up in a time of socio-cultural flux which gave him more artistic flexibility than his predecessors. He considered strict European musical training oppressive and dropped out of formal study to explore native Brazilian musical traditions, playing in street bands and improvising on the cello. Yet later time spent in Paris meant he was not completely divorced from the Western classical approach. His Bachianas brasileiras summarise this union well; approximately translating to ‘Bach Inspired Brazilian Pieces’, Villa-Lobos wrote 9 suites which take Bachian structural frameworks such as fugues, preludes and toccatas and injects them with the character of Brazilian vocal styles and dances. Bachianas Brasileiras no 1 for ‘an orchestra of cellos’ was dedicated to the Catalan-Puerto Rican cellist Pablo Casals and combines a classical introduction with the embolada (a fast, often improvised Brazilian folk ballad), and a Bachian prelude with a sentimental modinha (love song). The work closes with a fugue subtitled ‘Conversa’ or ‘conversation’, describing the dancelike dialogue of the cellos. Recorded live in the RCM Performance Hall on 20 November 2024.
