#worldofwarplanes #wowp #gameplay The Vickers Venom (Type 279) was a British prototype fighter developed in the mid-1930s to meet Air Ministry Specification F.5/34, which sought a modern single-seat fighter capable of catching contemporary bomber aircraft. Designed and built by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd, the Venom was a low-wing, single-engine monoplane with a stressed-skin fuselage and eight .303-inch Browning machine guns—making it heavily armed for its day. The aircraft was powered by a Bristol Aquila radial engine, chosen for good tropical performance, but this powerplant proved underwhelming compared to the inline Rolls-Royce Merlin engines that soon dominated fighter designs. First flown on 17 June 1936, the Venom demonstrated respectable speed and excellent maneuverability for its power, with a strong roll and tight turning ability. However, its radial engine lacked the performance potential of the Merlin, and the Air Ministry ultimately rejected the design in favor of what became the iconic Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire fighters. Only one prototype was ever built, and it was scrapped in 1939 after a crash during testing.
