This trick works because of how friction behaves at a microscopic level. Even surfaces that look smooth are covered in tiny bumps and valleys, and only the tips of those bumps actually touch. The visible contact area is the area that looks like it is touching, but the real contact area is much smaller and is made up of all those tiny points where the bumps actually meet. When you slide an object upward while pressing it into a wall, those microscopic bumps begin to deform and flatten, which increases the real contact area between the two surfaces. As more of these contact points engage, friction increases.
