Administrative health data is everywhere — but using it well is the hard part. On episode 6 of season 2, Dr. Eric Benchimol joins us to help break down how routinely collected data, rigorous reporting, and modern analytics can transform population health research. We explore the power, limitations, and future of administrative health data, touching on the reporting standards and machine learning approaches that are helping to shape modern population health research on this great episode that will be key to you as you continue on your scholarly journey! We're extremely excited to be joined by Dr. Eric Benchimol, pediatric gastroenterologist at SickKids, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto, Senior Core Scientist at ICES, and Northbridge Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Dr. Benchimol leads internationally recognized research using large-scale health datasets to understand why Canada has among the highest rates of IBD. We break down what administrative health data is, its key strengths and limitations, and what emerging scholars need to know before using it. This wide ranging discussion also covers the RECORD reporting guidelines, the Canadian Gastrointestinal Epidemiology Consortium, and a recent CMAJ study using machine learning to examine premature mortality in people living with IBD. So grateful for another engaging conversation that's essential for trainees, clinicians, and researchers who are interested in population-based methods and real-world data as the continue on their scholar journey.
