In this iBiology talk, Susan Lindquist talks about the incredible diversity of protein structures, the importance of proper protein folding, and the problems that arise when proteins are misfolded. Speaker Biography: Susan Lindquist is a member and former Director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. She is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Professor of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work on yeast prions and protein chaperones established the molecular basis for protein-based mechanisms of inheritance. More recently she has built tractable genetic models of complex protein misfolding diseases, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's and Huntington’s diseases. Dr. Lindquist is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the Royal Society. She received the 2009 National Medal of Science for her many scientific achievements.
