While the rate of progress in all sectors of our society has been phenomenal in the recent past, we are still wanting to continue the rate of innovations in order to meet many of the pressing challenges that we are facing today. In this talk, Dr Peng Du from The University of Auckland highlights the importance of interdisciplinary work in healthcare. He discusses the amazing complexity of the human body and what it takes to discover a potential cure for a disease. The talk concludes with a few highlights of the work led by the student body at the university to overcome the divisions of traditional subject disciplines. The horizon remains bright! Dr Peng Du is a Senior Research Fellow in the Gastrointestinal Research Group at the University of Auckland Bioengineering Institute. Since completing a degree in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in Bioengineering, Peng has received numerous accolades and awards, including the Marsden Fast Start Grant, a Rutherford Foundation NZ Post-Doctoral Fellowship and a Rutherford Discovery Fellowship. Peng is heavily involved with mathematical modelling in gastrointestinal electrophysiology, where he has developed cutting-edge technology to improve clinical research and diagnosis of any abnormal activity within the gut by monitoring bio-electric signals. This research led to his success as the 2018 Prime Minister's MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist winner, a prestigious award dedicated to rising New Zealand scientists involved in leading-edge research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
