Bataan is reshaping the future of affordable housing through community-centered solutions and thoughtful architectural design, ensuring everyone has access to a life of belonging, peace, and connection. The designed open hallways with windows and doors at each end promote natural cross-flow ventilation and meet Fire Code and National Building Code requirements, as they are considered exits despite having these openings. A central atrium promotes community oversight, helping deter undesirable behaviors and fostering a safer, more socially responsible environment. This design encourages social interaction among neighbors, fostering better relationships and a stronger sense of community among residents. A Genuine Spirit of Community The design provides a familiar, welcoming transition for families accustomed to single-detached homes, offering a more natural and open environment compared to enclosed, artificially lit hallways. Open hallways with a central atrium, inspired by ancient Chinese ventilation methods, enhance air circulation and improve indoor air quality while reducing the need for mechanical cooling. Proper natural ventilation is crucial for maintaining indoor air quality, regulating temperature, preventing moisture buildup, and fostering a healthy and energy-efficient living environment. Ancient Chinese architecture mastered the art of comfort through the clever use of induced airflow, a natural and sustainable cooling technique. The centerpiece of this design is the central courtyard or atrium, which played a critical role in regulating indoor temperatures and airflow. The concept utilizes the "stack effect," where warm air rises and exits through the top of a building's atrium. As this warm air leaves, it creates a negative pressure zone at the lower levels, pulling cooler outside air in through lower windows and doorways. This airflow circulates through the building, carrying heat and stale air upwards, naturally cooling the space. In modern multi-story housing, this principle, inspired by ancient designs, helps reduce the need for air conditioning, lowers energy use, and improves air quality. The open hallways surrounding the atrium enhance this airflow, creating healthier, more comfortable, and environmentally friendly living environments. A simple innovation that changes the high-rise affordable housing into more livable, stronger community bonding residential project, refocusing on housing as a fundamental human need, and not a commodity. Because a home is not just a building, when architecture is designed with the intention of nurturing our well-being, it transforms a mere space into a sanctuary—a place where we feel grounded, inspired, and at peace and a place where our hearts belong.
