In 1941, the M3 Lee was the most mocked tank in the world. The Americans called it the Iron Cathedral. The British called it the Three-Storey Disaster. The Soviets called it a Coffin for Seven Brothers. The Germans laughed and called it a Splendid Target - ten feet tall on a flat desert, impossible to hide, impossible to miss. But in May 1942 at Gazala, Rommel's Panzers discovered this ridiculous machine could kill them from ranges where German guns were useless.
