There are few experiences more challenging in the sport of saltwater fly fishing than catching a bonefish, tarpon, and permit in the same day. Aside the skill required to accurately cast long distances, the requirement for environmental conditions to be perfect, and the borderline supernatural ability to find all three species in a constrained amount of time - there are few places on earth where these circumstances all align in favor of the angler. This happens in Belize more than anywhere else in the world. The boundless flats on the west side and ocean side of Ambergris Caye are teeming with life. Home to vast schools of bonefish, sometimes 1,000 strong, aggressive schools of elusive permit (some in the 40lb class), and roaming pods of tarpon that patrol the mangrove lined lagoons. Belize affords fly fishermen an angler's paradise that is unrivaled, anywhere else in the Caribbean. The opportunity to catch a saltwater Grand Slam, for even the most accomplished fly anglers - is one of uncanny rarity. In this episode, I join several of the finest inshore anglers in the country of Belize to pursue and successfully catch a bonefish, tarpon, and permit on fly. A goal i have pursued over three decades of fly fishing. Join me, Daryl, and Ken as we journey into a variety of majestic shallow water ecosystems in pursuit of the most coveted inshore game fish in Central America. In addition to our odyssey in to the back country of Belize, we take time in this video to discuss the importance of preserving marine ecosystems - particularly those threatened by unscrupulous commercial developers. Belize has attracted tourists from all over the world, and with that, a rush to build vacation housing has followed suit. The environmental damage caused by careless and greedy developers has devastated the inshore fishery - and the fight to preserve what's left of these ecosystems is evolving swiftly. In previous episodes, we covered what was happening at Cayo Rosario - once the most exceptional permit fishing ground in the country. What is left of the island is a travesty, in the wake of an illegal development which decimated the ecology of a fragile marine ecosystem. Be sure to spread the word about what happened at Cayo Rosario - and visit https://www.defendcayorosario.com to see how you can help make a difference.
