On July 20, 1994, Jerrod Murray was born in Asher, Oklahoma, a tiny little town with less than 300 people. Growing up, Murray was described as an odd child. When he was five years old, he tried to hang himself with a rope, but fortunately, the rope was able to hold him, and the young Murray survived. His brother found him unconscious on the floor. When his parents asked him why he tried to hang himself, he couldn’t give them an answer. Growing up, Murray was overweight, a reason many of his peers used to bully him. As he continued to get older, his odd behaviour continued; he became reclusive and insisted on wearing a black suit because he liked the weight of it. Although Murray was an intelligent kid, he never finished high school. Instead, he went on to get his GED and attend East Central University in Oklahoma. In university, Murray continued to wear black suits with a black trench coat. During his time at university Murray often thought about brutal murders, bombings and torture. Despite these dark thoughts, he was described as harmless, and none of his peers believed him capable of murder. While at university, Murray’s grandfather passed away. It was after this tragic event in his life that he began plotting his first and only murder. Murray worked on his plan for nearly three weeks without a specific target in mind. Eventually, he decided he was going to kill his roommate — a man by the name of Generro Sanchez. On December 5, 2012, Sanchez agreed to give Murray a ride to the local Walmart in exchange for $20. When the pair pulled into the parking lot, Murray, had other plans. He pulled out a .40-caliber Springfield handgun, which he had stolen from someone in his hometown. He then ordered Sanchez to keep driving, directing him north of Asher. During the course of the drive, Sanchez began to grow nervous. To help his roommate ease his mind, Murray unloaded his gun and placed the magazine in Sanchez’s lap. But unbeknownst to Sanchez, Murray had a second magazine in his pocket, which he then took out and hid in his lap.
