How are IVF success rates really calculated? That 85% you see in ads might not mean what you think. Clinics often showcase impressive IVF success rates—but those numbers can vary dramatically depending on how they’re calculated. Here’s what you need to know: 1. Per Oocyte Recovery (Egg Collection): Some clinics only count IVF cycles that make it to egg retrieval. If your cycle gets canceled due to poor response or low follicle count, it’s not counted—making the success rate seem higher. 2. Per Blastocyst Transfer: Success is sometimes calculated only for embryos that reach the blastocyst stage (day 5–7). Not all embryos make it that far, so again—only the best cases are included. 3. Per PGT-A Tested Embryos: PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies) selects genetically normal embryos. Using this as the denominator gives a very high success rate—but only after many embryos are ruled out. What’s the real success rate? It should be measured per full IVF cycle, not just per egg collection or embryo transfer. That gives you the true picture of your chances—from the start of treatment to live birth. Why does this matter? Because transparency is everything in your fertility journey. Don’t be misled by inflated numbers. Always ask your clinic how they calculate success. If you’re planning IVF or just starting to explore your options, understanding these metrics can empower you to make better decisions.
