Shoulder dislocation usually occurs if the tissues in the shoulder are torn and in rare cases, due to the fractures in the bones of the shoulder. There is no physiotherapy regimen which can treat this effectively, and some form of the surgery or the other is needed. In today’s age, there are two types of surgery. One is Arthroscopic bankart repair, or the keyhole surgery. In this type of surgery, the surgeons make small holes in the shoulder joint, insert a camera and repair the affected tissues. This is a relatively simple procedure and the patient can get discharged from the hospital within a day. The patient will be put on a period of immobilization in a sling for about 2-3 weeks, followed by physiotherapy. The second surgical option is Latarjet procedure, wherein the bone loss is supplemented with additional bone which can be taken from either the same shoulder joint, or from other bone graft areas in the body. This is then fixed with a couple of screws. This is an open surgery and the patient can get discharged from the hospital after 2-3 days.
