Holocaust Memorial Day is the day when people remember the genocide of millions of Jewish people and other people who were killed by the Nazis during the Second World War. Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27th January. On the 27th of January 1945, the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated, therefore the 27th of January is a symbolic day, which reflects the hope that dark times come to an end. The first Holocaust Memorial Day was held in 27th January 2001, and has been on the same day every year since. There are themes for each year, to reflect and remember those who were killed, and those who suffered.
