#train #railfan #travel While we were beset by dodgy weather during Ashland Train Day 2025, the day after was the polar opposite. Lower temperature, less humidity, a nearly cloudless sky - our biggest worry was the wind gusts that buffeted the tripod in places. I provided transportation for a few of my fellow @VirtualRailfan personalities as we took advantage of the good weather to visit a few locations outside of the Ashland town limits. 0:00 - City Dock Park, Fredericksburg - Northeast Regional 96 The RF&P Sub was quiet for much of our time in Fredericksburg, but the local birds of prey - including at least one bald eagle - kept us entertained as they criscrossed the Rappahannock River while fishing. It wasn't until after 11 that we saw our first train - Northeast Regional 96, led by ALC-42 364. 1:33 - Amtrak 89, Palmetto P42 159 led the way for the southbound Palmetto a few minutes later. As the last car crossed the bridge, one of the birds dove into the river and emerged clutching a fish. As for our own hunt, it was time to change locations. 2:23 - Woodford (Jones Crossing) - Amtrak 79, Carolinian The engineer at the throttle of P42 116 put on a fine demonstration of the acoustics at Jones Crossing as the Carolinian rocketed past. 3:20 - CSX I031 CSX finally got a train in edgewise with I031, led by CM44AC 7217 and its unrebuilt cousin, AC4400CW 395. 4:29 - CSX M405 Shades of the old Q703 - M405 showed off its reincarnated solid trash consist as the train hurried south behind ES44AH 931, C40-8W 7809, and GP40-2 6138, with ES44AH 771 bringing up the rear as the DPU. 6:26 - Doswell - Amtrak 80, Carolinian Like its southbound counterpart at Jones Crossing, the engineer of the northbound Carolinian put on a fine demonstration of the Doppler effect with the horn of P42 182 as the train hustled through Doswell. 7:06 - Amtrak 40, Floridian A good opportunity to compare and contrast motive power as the Carolinian was followed a few minutes later by the Floridian, powered by ALC-42s 361 and 365. 7:46 - Northeast Regional 153 One more, this time in the other direction as Northeast Regional 153 streaked southward behind ALC-42 327. 8:38 - Ashland - Amtrak 53, Auto Train We continued south to Ashland and had time to relax trackside before Amtrak's southbound flagship made its appearance, led by ALC-42 367 and P40 817. 10:37 - Amtrak 41, Floridian The southbound Floridian also sported mixed motive power, with P42 142 on point and ALC-42 354 assisting. 11:29 - Amtrak 90, Palmetto Stalwart P42 181 led the northbound Palmetto through town. 12:38 - Northeast Regional 124 Northeast Regional 124 also sported a P42 for motive power, albeit in Phase II heritage livery instead of workaday Phase V. It was a nice bit of flair to end the evening - as far as filming with the Canon, that is.
