1. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin): The main protagonist. He is the resourceful and mischievous 8-year-old boy who is accidentally left behind by his family and must defend his house from two burglars using a series of clever booby traps. 2. Harry Lime (Joe Pesci): The primary antagonist. He is the hot-headed, ruthless, and slightly smarter mastermind of the "Wet Bandits," who poses as a police officer to scout houses to rob in the neighborhood. 3. Marv Merchants (Daniel Stern): The secondary antagonist. He is the dim-witted, gullible, and clumsy half of the "Wet Bandits" who provides much of the movie's physical comedy and insists on leaving the water running at their crime scenes. 4. Kate McCallister (Catherine O'Hara): Kevin's loving but frantically worried mother. Her entire arc in the film focuses on her desperate, relentless journey across the country to get back to her son. 5. Peter McCallister (John Heard): Kevin's father. He tries to manage the chaos, calm down his wife, and coordinate the family's eventual return from Paris to Chicago. 6. Old Man Marley (Roberts Blossom): The mysterious, rumored-to-be-scary neighbor. He acts as a misunderstood figure who ultimately bonds with Kevin over family estrangement and arrives at the climax to save Kevin from the burglars. 7. Buzz McCallister (Devin Ratray): Kevin's bullying older brother. His antagonistic behavior toward Kevin starts the fight that gets Kevin sent to the attic, and his pet tarantula later helps Kevin ward off the burglars. 8. Gus Polinski (John Candy): The overly friendly and talkative "Polka King of the Midwest." He provides comedic relief and a crucial ride in his polka band's rental van to help Kate get from Scranton back to Chicago. 9. Fuller McCallister (Kieran Culkin): Kevin's younger cousin. He is known for drinking entirely too much Pepsi and wetting the bed, which is the exact reason Kevin refuses to sleep in the same bed as him and ends up in the attic. 10. Uncle Frank (Gerry Bamman): Kevin's cheap, abrasive, and obnoxious uncle. He refuses to pay for the family pizza, steals crystal glasses from the first-class flight, and constantly berates Kevin. 11. Linnie McCallister (Angela Goethals): Kevin's older sister. She is best remembered for condescendingly telling Kevin that he is what the French call "les incompétents" (completely incompetent). 12. Megan McCallister (Hillary Wolf): Another of Kevin's older sisters. While she also teases him at the beginning of the film, she is the sibling who shows the most genuine concern for his well-being once they realize he was left behind.
