Today, Dr. Abhishek Shukla explained the role of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) feeding in providing nutrition to long-term patients. Typically, an NG (Nasogastric) tube is used to deliver food, fluids, and medication. However, prolonged use of an NG tube has significant drawbacks. One of the most serious risks is aspiration pneumonia, which occurs when food, liquid, or stomach secretions accidentally enter the lungs. This happens because the NG tube keeps the esophagus open, allowing stomach contents to flow back (regurgitate) into the mouth and potentially into the lungs. For unconscious patients, this is particularly dangerous since they cannot cough or clear the secretions on their own. To address this issue, a PEG tube is used as an alternative. A PEG tube is inserted directly into the stomach through an invasive procedure. This provides a more convenient and long-term solution for feeding, making it easier to maintain nutrition, hydration, and medication delivery in patients who are unable to eat orally. In addition to minimizing the risk of aspiration, PEG tubes offer more comfort for patients, especially those needing long-term care. The procedure is safe, effective, and commonly used in patients with neurological disorders, stroke, or conditions requiring extended nutritional support. #AasthaCares #PEGFeeding #PatientCare #GeriatricCare #AspirationPneumonia #LongTermCare #NutritionalSupport #FeedingTubes #PalliativeCare #PatientSafety #sajournalofgeriatric #aasthahospice #drabhishekshukla
