At the time of the Popish Plot he was arrested, having been betrayed by a woman servant, and executed in 1679, aged 70. The former friary was rebuilt and used by the Portuguese Embassy during the first decade of the eighteenth century. In 1723 it was acquired by the Sardinian Embassy and, until comparatively recently, this parish became known as the Sardinian Chapel.' 0:57:37 Lincoln’s Inn Fields The Martyrs of Lincoln's Inn Fields 1:02:51 St Anselm and St Cecilia Catholic Church. 1:04:29 The Ship Tavern (12 Gate Street) A series of Relief Acts, starting in the 1770s, made life easier for English Catholics. The 1778 Relief Act allowed Catholics to join the Army and own and inherit property. It also abolished the £100 reward for informers against Catholic priests and schoolmasters. Despite its limited nature, there was much opposition to the Act. At the beginning of 1780 John Wesley wrote of chains forging at the anvil of Rome for the rising generation' and the purple power of Rome advancing by hasty strides to overspread this once happy nation." The Protestant Association campaigned for the repeal of the new law and, in June, the most serious English riots of the century broke out, led by Lord George Gordon. These 'Gordon Riots were one of the most agressive displays of English anti-popery. Challoner himself became the target of the mob's fury. Luckily for the bishop, the crowd could not find his lodging in Gloucester Street and shortly afterwards he moved to the safety of Finchley. In the meantime 285 people lost their lives; Newgate prison was set alight and over a thousand prisoners freed, and London illumined by the fire at Mr Langdale's distillery on Holborn Hill. Most critically for us, the 'Sardinian Chapel' was once again destroyed by a mob. Challoner returned to 25 Gloucester Street once the rioters' blue cockades and flags had disappeared from the streets, but he was badly shaken by the experience and saddened to see so much of Catholic London in tatters. He suffered a stroke on 10 January 1781 at his home. His last word had been 'Charity, as he indicated some money in his pocket given to him that morning for the benefit of the poor.
