For a few brief, sweet moments I had the enjoyable privilege to take a step back from politics. I stopped checking the news veraciously. I felt confident that weird shit was going go down for sure, but for a moment we were in the eye of the storm. The vaccine was in its earliest stage of deployment, the election had gone to the democrats, Georgia was beyond my power to influence. Obviously that wouldn't last long. This week brought news of tremendous hope: the two crucial senate races in Georgia went Blue. In a few short weeks, the Federal government will be entirely controled by a narrow majority of Democrats. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of the Democratic Party. I wouldn't honestly call them a "liberal" or "progressive" party. Even so, I have hope that a Blue federal government will be able to push for at least a minimum of the beginnings of necessary legislation to counter systemic racism, climate devestation, the decline of democracy, etc. And maybe something more radical will take place. Maybe we will see medicare for all, the end of the electoral college, banning of the filibuster and gerrymandering, the addition of new States to the Union, ranked voting, the Green New Deal, or reforms to the Supreme Court. I doubt it, but at least these things are possible. And this week also brought something terrible: a veritable decleration of war by the alt-right on the United States. Granted, I'm not a particularly big fan of the US. Still, this is and should be terrifying. Armed, white supremist, domestic terrorists took control of the US capitol building. There is no precedent for this in our history. The closest thing was the war of 1812, when a foreign empire invaded the US. More recently, the capitol building was evacuated during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The difference here is that these were US citizens marching against our own government in an act of insurrection. And that is what they had in mind. These are people who honestly believe that the solution to our current situation is a second civil war--and they want to make that happen. This is a part of a massive movement, from the Boogaloos to the 3% to the proud boys to the KKK to the MAGA hats. They are armed, they have been training for war, and they are impatient for it. It feels like Fight Club come true, with a swath of dissatisfied white bois enacting project mayhem on the country. And so far, they got away with it. This cannot happen. The police simply allowed them to march on the building. The president encuraged them. This cannot happen. This is how fascist regimes solidify. Hitler never won a free election. He was a bully who mobilized a paramilitary organiation to force himself into power. He used racism, generalized poverty, and the fear of communism to make himself appeal to the elite of the day, and when that stopped working, he used violence, fear, and force. And that is exactly where we are headed. This is an armed momvent based on the personality cult of DJT, and they want to start a civil war to make sure they get what they want. Only cowards and fools desire war. And right now that is my biggest hope: that the alt-right is too incompetent, too adherent to its founding memes, to frankly stupid to launch an effective coup. We will see. So, at anyrate, here is a video. I began this poem hitching in a van from bismarck back to Standing Rock; I finished it one night sitting alone in the shed where I was living at the time. Reed Jones and these events more-or-less all happened, though I combined two different events and dramatized them somewhat. And today I put some new chords to those old words and recorded this. I used to sing it every night before bed, but eventually those wounds healed and I put away this poem. For whatever reason, right now these sentiments feel very alive. May we all remember why we came here and for what we fight. May we each find the courage to stand up in our own ways in these strange times. May we live the faith, that water is life and we will win. Water is life and we will win.
