NIR MPV No.11 is seen on sandite/waterjetting duty at Adelaide & Whiteabbey on the 31st October 2024. What is sandite? Sandite is a solution made up from antifreeze, sand and steel-shot which is applied to the rail head during the leaf fall season to help reduce the risk of trains slipping. When leaf's fall onto the rails and trains run over them it crushes them into a substance called leaf mulch which leads to the rails become slippery which in turn causes trains to slip when accelerating and braking this problem is pretty much like black ice for trains. As well as this when rails are contaminated with leaf mulch it can cause problems with the operation of electrical equipment such as track circuits. To help combat the problem of low rail adhesion rail head treatment trains such as MPV No.11 are used to spray high pressure water onto the rail to clean it before applying a layer of sandite. Unfortunately this is one of the main causes for train delays at this time of year.
