The City Surfers were a short-lived side project for Bobby and Roger McGuinn, who was a staff writer at Bobby’s T. M. Music at the time. He and Frank Gari wrote a song called Beach Ball in the style of the surf music of the period, and Bobby became enthusiastic about it. He, McGuinn and Gari went into the studio to record it, joined by Terry Melcher and (possibly) Kenny Young. Bobby played drums and was part of the backing vocals. Backed with Sun Tan Baby (written by Frank Gari and Jimmy Basile), the single has become something of a collector’s item. A second single followed, featuring Powder Puff (written by Frank Gari and Arthur Resnick) and 50 Miles to Go (by Kenny Young). However, the concept sounds a little tired even by this early stage, and The City Surfers gracefully disbanded. Despite its obscurity, Beach Ball is still great fun some sixty years after it was recorded. It is clear that these recordings are fondly remembered by Roger McGuinn himself, with him telling audiences about how the recordings came about before singing a short version of Beach Ball in his live performances at one point – and even playfully asking his Twitter followers in 2016 whether The City Surfers should reunite!
