This song was performed in a single take on an Ableton Move using four tracks. It's a blend of clips I made on the Move. I'm performing live arrangement, plus I'm playing Move's velocity and poly-pressure pads. I'm also using a Novation Launchkey Mini MK4 to play synths on tracks 3 and 4. 00:00 Credits. 00:03 Intro (Cinque Terre). 00:15 Movement 1 Vibes (Colosseum). 00:23 Switch to track one to play some pads on the drum rack. 00:32 Break 1 (Time laps arial footage above Denver). 00:43 Launchkey Mini MK4 on MIDI Channel 1. Plays track selected, in this case Track 4 Wavetable preset with some macro parameters tweaks. 00:50 I use the touch-sensitive encoder to see what macro params are under the hood. 01:04 Happy accident. I didn't realize when you press a pad to do a "stop clip" that it arms the track. I play a note and then just say "fuck it" and start to riff out. 01:09 Ends up I really dig this lead, so I continue to vibe. (Rome Subway vibes). 01:30 TWISTED drum break with one of the pads. Drum Sampler Stretch FX FTW! (Pantheon). 01:47 Change up chords to add some tension. (Roman Baths). 02:08 Big bass with some live macro tweaks. (Museo Galileo in Florence. Armillary Sphere). 02:28 Another melodic shift. How will I get back from here - haha. 02:51 Break 2 03:00 Drum improv back on Track 1. (Cinque Terre Ocean) 03:20 Minor dissonant vibes & Lead Solo back on Track 2. Since playing track 2 was a happy accident, I had no idea where this would go so I just improvised to call back the first happy accident. (Trevi Fountain) 03:50 Callback to first movement (Back to Cinque Terre to visually bookend the piece.) 04:02 Hold track button for each track, this lets you edit params including track volume. Wind-down the track Elektron-style. 04:10 Select remaining Track 4 - and go to Reverb which is FX2 for that track and turn up wet / dry to soak the track in reverb for the ending. 04:22 End credits and links to https://ModulateThis I frequently perform live using synths with various hardware and software rigs, but this was my first attempt at creating something on the Move. A test really, to see what I could achieve within the constraints of four tracks. The set consists of one drum rack, one bass, and two synth tracks. I employed several techniques with automation and per-step modulations when programming the clips. The Move's portability allowed me to continuously add to and experiment with this piece for several days as I carried it around the house. I used Ableton Cloud to sync the project, allowing me to listen and experiment with the arrangement on iOS Ableton Note. Then I’d pick up where I left off on Move. Some transferable knowledge from my years with Push, Elektron and Deluge there for sure, especially with the 16-step sequencer buttons and parameter locks. I'm using 3 instances of Wavetable in this one, and with automation, you can really change the character from clip to clip to make it seem like you have more than 4 tracks. I also use 16 Pitch's mode to add an additional bass line toward the 2nd half of the piece. After I was satisfied with the clips, I began developing live keyboard ideas I could improvise around. On the Move, this process works as follows: you plug in a MIDI controller, set it to channel 1, then use the Track Select button to focus that track for the controller. I set up the camera and recorded about 10 takes. I liked this one the best, so I went with it. Later, I had the idea to add video elements. I bumped into so many happy accidents while programming and performing that I don't think would have happened on my other machines. As a result, I came up with all sorts of twisted changes in this song. Super fun! I would love to perform more with Move live so I'm looking forward to the devs rolling out more performance-oriented features. I deliberately left the track unmixed and unmastered so you can hear the Move's raw sound going directly into an audio interface. Credits: Music, Video and Graphics © 2024 Mark J.
