Intern, resident, or fellow: whether you’re a medical student or not, you’ve probably heard all of these terms at one point or another. However, what these terms mean is not always clear. (see here: https://scholarships360.org/college-a...) Regardless, almost all of these individuals will do clinic! Clinic is a time when you see patients in an outpatient setting! "Outpatient care—the kind that you don’t have to stay in a hospital for—can vary greatly. Other than an annual check-up or blood test, almost any other kind of care can be defined as outpatient. These may be diagnostic tests, treatments, or other types of procedures. Outpatient care may be provided in a hospital, as well as a walk-in clinic, an outpatient surgery center, and even your doctor’s office." (see here: https://www.cigna.com/knowledge-cente...) What is Primary Care Clinic? A part of residency training where you serve as someone’s primary care provider (PCP)! Do all residencies have primary care clinic? Most pediatric residencies, primary care residencies, family medicine residencies, and internal medicine residencies will have SOME form of primary care clinic! Even if not Primary care, even SUPER specialized specialties still have clinics! What is a PCP anyway? “Usually, PCPs can treat conditions in their own offices. If they can't, they can refer you and your child to a trusted specialist. If patients need ongoing treatment or is admitted to a hospital, the PCP may oversee the care, help you make decisions related to treatment, or refer you to other specialists if needed. One of a PCP's most important jobs is to help keep patients from getting sick in the first place. This is called preventive care.” (https://kidshealth.org/en/parents/pri...) Context of Clinic Tends to be OUTPATIENT Seeing patients IN the CLINIC for 30-45 minute appointments Usually NON-EMERGENT and ELECTIVE Often times, less CRITICAL than INPATIENT, but MORE BROAD Focus on PREVENTION and AREAS of CONCERN! Also HUGE focus on maintenance therapies. To be efficient in clinic, highly recommend that you prepare effectively and make sure that you are able to address all of your concerns!
