Long queues outside gas agencies are being reported in several areas. As tensions between Iran and Israel escalate, the crisis is becoming even more serious. One of the biggest concerns is that Iran has blocked the Strait of Hormuz — the key route through which a major portion of the world’s oil and gas supply passes. If the route remains blocked, LPG supply disruptions could intensify in the coming weeks and months. 🌍 Global Energy Shock | Hormuz Strait Crisis The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is one of the most critical global energy shipping routes. With this route blocked, global crude oil and natural gas supply chains have been affected. India imports around 88% of its crude oil needs, and a significant portion of this supply traditionally passed through this route. Before the conflict, India was receiving nearly 2.5 to 2.7 million barrels of crude oil per day through this corridor. 🇮🇳 India’s Oil Strategy | Multiple Import Sources However, the situation has not spiraled completely out of control because India has diversified its oil import sources in recent years. While India imported crude oil from around 27 countries in 2006–07, that number has now increased to nearly 40 countries. Russian oil has also emerged as a major alternative supply source, with India purchasing large volumes of discounted crude from Russia. 💥 LPG Crisis | Why Cooking Gas Is Hit Harder Compared to petrol and diesel, the LPG sector is facing a more serious challenge. India is the second-largest consumer of LPG in the world. The country consumes nearly 3 million tonnes of LPG every month. However, only around 40–45% of this demand is met through domestic production. The remaining 55–60% has to be imported. The biggest problem is that nearly 85–90% of India’s LPG imports traditionally pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which means the disruption has directly impacted LPG supply.
