Best of Best is a side-view, one-on-one fighting game. Players select one of eight playable characters, each defined by a simple gameplay archetype rather than story background. Matches are fought in a best-of-three-round format using directional inputs combined with buttons for punches and kicks. All characters share basic attacks and have a small number of unique special moves. There are no super meters, combo systems, or advanced mechanics. Cheap tactics are always the easiest way to victory and some special moves, called "Arts of Sure Killing", have simply ridiculous priorities. Worst are the projectiles, who not only leave the characters invulnerable throughout the animation, but make it harmful to even touch their body. The selectable fighters are differentiated by speed, strength, reach, and movement style: Tom is the default all-rounder. His speed, strength, and reach are evenly balanced, making him easy to use without excelling in any single area. His special moves are direct extensions of his basic attacks and emphasize reliability. Terry Bogard clone. Hawk is a speed-oriented striker. He moves faster than most of the roster and recovers quickly from attacks. His abilities focus on quick jabs and grabs. He look like Hulk Hogan. Sha Lin is a nimble fighter built around leg techniques and spacing. His attacks often cover more horizontal range, allowing him to control mid-distance. His special moves combine movement and offense, making him difficult to corner. Chun-lee look a like. Abdul is the heavyweight grappler. He is slow and powerful, relying on close-range grabs, slams, and high-damage strikes. His attacks are risky, but successful hits can quickly turn a match. Dhalsim / Blanka hybrid. Scott is an aggressive military-style brawler. His gameplay favors constant forward pressure with strong, direct attacks. His special moves deal high damage but offer little precision. It's Rambo. Sasaki represents a disciplined martial artist archetype. His abilities are balanced and timing-focused, with clean strikes and controlled special moves. He performs consistently without extreme strengths or weaknesses. Haohmaru clone. Tango is a punk street fighter with erratic movement. His attacks emphasize unpredictability and sudden flurries, allowing him to surprise opponents but limiting sustained damage output. it's the Punk Rocker trope. Alli is a balanced but unconventional fighter. His abilities mix standard strikes with evasive movement such as spinning or repositioning attacks, rewarding varied playstyles. Recycled Asset. He is a direct carry-over from SunA’s previous game, Dragon Master. He wears a turban and vest, and his moves include "Yoga Flame" style fire breath and a "Sonic Boom" projectile. Like in many Korean fighting games at the time, there is no boss, nor any hidden characters. For some reason the player gets to chose a new character before every fight, even after winning a battle.
