Mike Worrall is a British surrealist artist born in 1942, in Matlock, Derbyshire... living in Australia since 1988. He has been painting since the early 1960's and is almost entirely self taught. He is committed to exploring the subconscious and he likes the art of Paul Delvaux and Max Ernst amongst others. As a child, Worrall was always intrigued by paintings involving an element of mystery... so he had the tendency to be drawn in that direction himself. He likes getting the viewer guessing and wondering what it's about! He believes he should not have to attempt to explain the enigma, and that the painting should retain some mystery for a lasting effect. He's interested in dreams and the subconscious, and in the inexplicable process of how one drifts from one thought to the next. Dreams are a great source of material for him and he has always had a fascination with beautiful subjects... particularly women, whom he loves to paint. "Especially getting a good expression or gaze!" as he says. He rarely uses a model, he prefers to make them up, or invent them out of his head. His works are in the collections of Victor Lownes, Alan Price of the Animals, Roman Polanski, Nicholas Roeg, Vincent Ward, Alex Proyas and many others.
