William Long is a graduate of the University of Maryland Medical School, where he did a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at the pioneering Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. In 1983 he came to Oregon to become Emanuel Hospital’s first Trauma Medical Director. Throughout his 35 years in that position, Long transformed trauma care on the West Coast, saving countless lives in the process. Under his leadership, Emanuel’s trauma program became the second Level 1 Trauma Center in the Pacific Northwest verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Long formed coalitions with police, first responders, EMTs, nurses, and medical and surgical specialists to create the first statewide trauma system in the American West. His extensive bibliography includes over 140 publications, including the development of the Injury Severity Score with Susan Baker, RN, PhD, at Johns Hopkins University, which was used for over 30 years internationally as a benchmark measuring the severity of injury. Long also helped develop the Legacy Biomechanical Laboratory, which has produced multiple patents for emergency and trauma products that are still in use today. Dr. William Long is one of four "History Makers" recognized by the Oregon Historical Society in 2022.
