Ahead of the exhibition EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY | My Country, a collaboration between Pace and D'Lan Contemporary, Vanessa Merlino spoke to Janet Holt, who spent many years with Emily Kam Kngwarray, forging a firm friendship as the artist painted at Delmore Downs. Here, Janet provides unique insights into Kngwarray's work, as someone who witnessed her paint on a daily basis. 'Emily Kngwarray's talents as an outstanding individual artist were recognised and nurtured by principal dealers Rodney Gooch, Christopher Hodges and Donald Holt. However, the women surrounding and supporting Emily may take credit for creating the working atmosphere that would produce the masterpieces of her opus. Emily’s adopted sister Lily Kngwarreye rarely left her side and was acutely attuned to her needs. However, Janet can be appreciated as the familial presence in which Emily also found equanimity. At Delmore, Emily and Janet were engaged in a symbiotic nurturing relationship. Janet would ‘look after’ Emily, attending to her health, comfort and studio needs to allow Emily to attend to her family and nurture the spiritual and environmental needs of her cultural obligations.' - Vanessa Merlino EMILY KAM KNGWARRAY | My Country | 6 June – 8 August 2025 Pace in collaboration with D'Lan Contemporary 5 Hanover Square, London W1S 1HQ - Video by @gd.content Photographs, courtesy Janet Holt - #dlancontemporary #pace #emilykamkngwarray
