Vintage Traffic Light Controller (United Kingdom c1965)

This controller was used in 'Portable Electric Traffic Signals' issued to GPO construction crews. The sequence is controlled by brass cams fixed to a geared motor. The sequence of lights and two second amber time is always fixed, but the green and red waiting times are adjustable (according to the traffic flowing each way). On each red and green phase a separate rheostat controls the speed of the motor to match the time set on the dial, and it's surprisingly accurate! The lights could also be operated manually by switching the motor from 'Auto' to 'Hand' and rotating the camshaft wheel at the front. The design of the cam switches also fulfilled the requirement for a mechanical interlock to prevent conflicting green signals (worst case failure).
