A Category 3 hurricane made landfall close to the Mississippi-Alabama State line on July 5, 1916, with record wind and storm surge impact in Mobile, Alabama, and then inland flooding throughout several states. An article from Mobile, in the Washington Times of July 9, 1916, relayed, "Conditions here are indescribable. The whole water front is a mass of wreckage. The wholesale district for blocks along the river front is under water. Practically every large building in the city suffered some damage, many of them being unroofed." The Pensacola Journal of July 11, 1916 printed that water rose to waist-deep in Mobile's M. & O. train depot, with water a half foot deep in Bienville Square. Ships and barges were piled on the piers. In Mobile, and beyond, the Gulf Coast Hurricane of July, 1916, took more than 80 lives and caused multi-million dollars in damage.
