Transcript Hey how’s it going guys! Welcome to our review of Old School Musical, now available in physical form on Nintendo Switch. You’re not going to want to miss it! And many thanks to the fine folk at Super Rare Games for sending us a copy to check out. Let’s get into it. Old School Musical is a comedy rhythm game by French developers La Moutarde. In it, you play as brothers Tib and Rob on a multidimensional mission to save your incredibly strict mother. Comprising of 20 levels, you’ll explore locations inspired by legendary titles of the 8 and 16 bit eras of gaming, all set against a chiptune soundtrack. It sure is an interesting concept, but is it any good? In this review we’ll be taking a look at the game itself and its brand new physical release from Super Rare Games to find out if you should pick Old School Musical… The game itself is fairly simple; you press the right button at the right time to the beat of music. You know, a rhythm game. But to it’s credit, it’s one of the better ones I’ve played on a standard controller. The difficulty options are well balanced, meaning there’s a real sense of satisfaction no matter your skill level. You’re also able to replay levels with friends in multiplayer, offering nice, competitive replayability. But what really sets Old School Musical apart is it’s comedy. I really enjoyed the text based banter between Tib, Rob and the other characters you meet along the way. Some cutscenes had me laughing out loud, and I’d honestly watch a web series based in this world. Then we get to the level design. The parodies are hilarious, and truly show a lot of love and tongue in cheek reverence for their source material. Jumping from the green fields of Pokémon, to the sewers of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the beachfront roads of OutRun, it feels like you’re playing through the greatest hits. The only problem is to pay attention to what buttons to press, you kind of have to ignore what’s going on behind it. This is a real shame, as I feel like there were plenty of references and easter eggs I missed from my split attention. The other main reason to play Old School Musical is it’s exceptional soundtrack. 50 chiptune songs, inspired by the titles lampooned in the game, elevates the experience to a whole different level. If you’re a fan of the genre like me, you’ll find yourself replaying levels just to jam out to your favourite tracks again. Now to look at the physical package brought to you by Super Rare Games. You’ll instantly be able to tell a lot of time and effort went into all the fine details. The box art is great, both on the outside and inside, and even the full colour manual doubles up as a mini artbook. You also get cool trading cards and stickers to sweeten the deal. And with a limited run of only 4,000 copies of the game being made, it’s a collectors item you won’t want to miss. And at time of recording they only have 8% of their stock left, so you better get a move on! To wrap up, Super Rare Game’s release of Old School Musical is an absolute delight. Sure the gameplay might be a little basic, but the aesthetic, humour and style it exudes will leave you with a smile on your face from beginning to end. And having the physical edition looks mighty fine in any collector’s shelf...
