Been excited to share this video! Showcasing Hype Keyboard's newest plate material PBT in the JJW Moment compared alongside the nylon and stock PP plate. I also do have an aluminum plate for the Moment that I somewhat regrettably didn't include in this comparison but honestly it isn't as good as running a plastic plate in this board (I was also just too lazy to rebuild and we all know this build process for this thing is kinda aids LOL). Its obvious that the Moment is one of those boards that has a pretty established meta build being mx blacks on a PP plate which I have tried in the past before here: • JJW Moment - Cherry MX Blacks on PP Plate ... . Its the meta build for good reason, PP is soft and comfortable to type on and you get some clean acoustics, but to my ears, its just too sharp and thin sounding. With the homie Tom from Hype Keyboards also stocking PBT as a plate material now and after really liking nylon as a plate material in the Forever65, I saw the opportunity to do a shootout with all 3 different plates which brings us to where we are now. About the different plate materials, right off the bat for typing feel wise from stiffest to softest, the order would be: PBT, Nylon, PP. Typing feel wise, PBT is definitely the stiffest and feels similar to typing on POM. Nylon is right between PBT and PP, with PP being the softest to type on out of the three. The stiffness of the plates also does transfer to how they sound. To my ears, out of the three materials, PBT is the loudest and fullest sounding, while PP is the most compressed/thin/muted sounding, and nylon lands somewhere between the two. Interestingly with nylon however, I do hear the most amount of case resonance with it compared to the other two plate materials. If I'm being completely real, they all also sound somewhat similar to one another too haha, the differences between these plastics definitely isn't as jarring vs comparing a plastic plate to a metal plate. So all of this is to say what? Have I broken the mx black on PP meta in the Moment? No, I haven't and this is the beauty of the hobby, there's so many options for plate materials nowadays with varying levels of differences that you can choose from based on your preference and nothing about what I've said about the three different materials is to say that one is better than the other, it all comes down to preference I'm honestly not sure which of these plates I plan to solder in either, I'm probably gonna play around with the three of these still. Let me know below which of the three plastic plate materials you enjoy the most in terms of sound!
