Sinus Infections: Symptoms may be more than just allergies

CINCINNATI (Liz Bonis) -- It's hard not to find someone coughing and sneezing during this time of year and if people have had allergies it might just be an extension of the symptoms but then again, it might not. Ear, nose and throat specialists at UC Health said some of the symptoms of allergies are turning into a bad respiratory infection and people need to get the right treatment to feel better. With certain seasonal plants still in bloom if people have sinus congestion or coughing it could be allergies. However, it could be that those allergy symptoms have sort of set in or migrated to become something else this time of year. Dr. Allen Seiden of UC Health said, Even if it began as an allergic problem, allergies can cause congestion, block the sinuses which can lead to a bacterial infection. So often times it needs to be treated before it will resolve. Those symptoms can vary but they tend to start in the nose and sort of move into the chest area. But Dr. Seiden said the most important thing people may want to pay attention to right now is how long they last. Typically a cold should last for at the most 10 days. So at five days, you should turn a corner at five days and by 10 days it should be gone. If you are symptomatic 10 days then that's a good indication it's gone into something more severe, said Dr. Seiden. Severe infections tend to be bacterial which may need antibiotics for treatment. According to Dr. Seiden and his team of ear, nose and throat specialists, You also need various decongestants treatments to try and get the respiratory tract open. So the sinuses can drain and the infection can resolve. If people have been hacking and coughing up crud longer than 10 days don't just say, I am getting over a cold. The big danger is that people are also heading into flu season so they don't want to be sick and rundown from another infection.
