Lau Pa Sat, also known as Telok Ayer Market, is one of Singapore’s most iconic and historic hawker centres. Located right in the heart of the Central Business District at 18 Raffles Quay, this heritage food landmark perfectly blends old-world charm with the modern city skyline. The name Lau Pa Sat means “Old Market” in Hokkien, and it has been a beloved gathering place for locals and tourists for more than a century. The market’s origins date back to the early 19th century, when it was first built as a fish market near the waterfront. In 1894, it was redesigned by British architect James MacRitchie, featuring a unique octagonal cast-iron structure imported from Glasgow, Scotland. The intricate Victorian-style ironwork and high ceilings make Lau Pa Sat one of the most beautiful and architecturally significant markets in Asia. Today, it stands as a National Monument, preserving a slice of Singapore’s colonial past amid its futuristic skyscrapers. By day, Lau Pa Sat serves as a bustling food haven, offering an incredible range of local and international dishes — from Hainanese chicken rice, laksa, and char kway teow to Japanese bento sets and Korean BBQ. The air is filled with the aroma of sizzling woks and fragrant spices, creating a true sensory feast for every visitor. When the sun sets, Lau Pa Sat transforms into the famous Satay Street. Boon Tat Street, right beside the market, is closed to traffic and filled with smoky satay stalls grilling juicy skewers of chicken, beef, mutton, and prawns over charcoal. The lively atmosphere, combined with the glow of the city lights, makes it one of the most magical night dining experiences in Singapore. Lau Pa Sat is more than just a food centre — it’s a living symbol of Singapore’s multicultural heritage and resilience. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a local foodie, this timeless market offers an unforgettable taste of Singapore’s culinary soul. #singapore #food #travel If you like my channel please like , subscribe and share.
